Professor of English and Comparative Literature, University of Oxford

Margaret Candfield Fellow, University College, Oxford

Associated Academic Staff, History of Art Department, University of Oxford

Member of the Zentrum für Klassikforschung (Research Centre for European Classicism), Klassik Stiftung Weimar (elected 2023)

My research is concerned principally with British and Continental European literature, philosophy, and visual arts (including architecture) from the mid-17th to mid-19th centuries (Enlightenment and Romanticism), particularly in response to the challenges and discontents of modernity and in the relation to the historical past. Historicization, periodization, and aesthetic theory are the focus of my current projects. More broadly, I am interested in European intellectual history from the Renaissance to the twentieth century, and my work has been used by philosophers, historians, and theologians as well as by literary scholars. The links below provide further information about my research and publications. Many of my publications are available on my Academia.edu web page, and a podcast interview with me about my research is on Youtube (May 2024).

My online seminar series “Historical Anxiety”, featuring discussions with philosopher Jeffrey Andrew Barash, historians François Hartog and Stefanos Geroulanos, and sociologist Hartmut Rosa, is available on Youtube.
